NEWS RELEASE 2nd November 2005
SIX GRENADIAN STUDENTS GOING OFF TO CHINA TO STUDY
Six Grenadian students have been awarded scholarships to study in the People’s Republic of China, as the first contingent under the Education Cooperation Agreement, made available when both countries established diplomatic ties in January this year.
They are Crystal Peters and Richard McQuilkin from Carriacou who will be studying Forensic Science and Computer Electronics respectively; Patti Joseph - Heritage tourism; Vonda Thompson - Medicine; Rhysie Joseph - Information Technology and Crispin Dabreo - Telecommunication Engineering.
They will depart for the People’s Republic of China on 6th November 2005.
The scholarships were made possible through the Department of Human Resources, the Government’s coordinating unit on matters pertaining to training.
Acting Permanent Secretary of the Department of Human Resources, Mr.Wayne Radix, urged the students to be mindful of their duty and exercise the discipline and patience necessary for good results in keeping the Grenada flag flying high.
The main policy of the Grenada Government is that more emphasis must be placed on empowering young people by creating opportunities for them to be educated to meaningfully participate in National development.
At a function on 2nd November 2005 where the awardees were presented with their travel tickets, Education Minister Hon. Claris Charles noted that Grenadian students abroad usually perform with excellence and is hopeful that the students in China will do likewise.
“You are going to perform at your best. You have to adjust and work hard and what you will see years down the road is the success in coming back home to serve your country.”
Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Grenada His Excellency Qian Hongshan expressed sentiments that the Grenada Government is on the right path when it attaches great importance to developing the education system by encouraging young people obtain knowledge.
He stated that it was the first impression he got on his arrival here.
Ambassador Qian called on all young people to embrace the opportunities provided by the Government.
The Grenada Government has provided hundreds of scholarships for study in various fields to Grenadian students over the years, in Cuba, Mexico and North America, among other territories, and now China.
Putting the Government’s policy on Education in perspective, Prime Minister Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell said his Government is very concerned with preparing the ground for the future of the country, which will depend heavily on an educated society.
“The emphasis of rebuilding is placed on the Government’s ability to invest in the development of young minds. This vision of preparing the young people to face up to challenges now in education is charting the right course for Grenada.”
Prime Minister Mitchell explained that the 2006 Budget will entail some ten million dollars for several initiatives in the area of youth development. He spoke highly of the National Youth Service Programme, Skills Training and micro enterprise projects, as three of the major components of the Government’s thrust in nurturing young people into the World of service.
Reflecting again on the awardees going of to China, the Grenadian Leader spoke of feeling proud that the establishment of ties between both countries was the perfect decision at this time and it is certainly paying off dividends.
He further disclosed that in Grenada’s hour of greatest need, the PRC had provided some one million US dollars of support to other Grenadian students in Universities abroad, who had found it difficult to cope financially, following the passage of hurricane Ivan.
Dr. Mitchell termed it a very generous gesture and spoke of the relationship between both countries as one that’s heading on the path for the long term benefit of both societies.
At the function, which was held in the Cabinet Room, Ministerial Complex, the students were accompanied by their parents, who have been urged to give them their fullest support and encouragement.
Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Patti Joseph promised that they will be true Grenadian Ambassadors and will stick to the task at hand with the tenacity essential for their success.
