DESMOND ALLUM, SC, WAS COURAGEOUS, VISIONARY CARIBBEAN MAN, CONSCIENTIOUS AND AN EFFECTIVE LITIGATOR:
June 19, 2010
I share with many others, my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Desmond Allum,SC. on his untimely passing on June 17,2010 at his residence in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.
I first met Desmond Allum in 1970 through an introduction by former Grenadian academic and senior lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Dr.Patrick Alfred Emmanuel (Now Deceased) The introduction of Desmond commonly called by friends as “Dessie” was made in Port-of-Spain at the time he defended Ex Lieutenant Raffique Shah at the famous Mutiny hearing. He was calmed and proved his litigation skills against such other legal heavy weights like Bruce Procope, QC, Theodore Guerra, SC and Karl-Hudson Philip, QC.From this period of time Dessie and I maintained regular contact and spoke at least once per year.
My feelings and admiration for this Caribbean Man was further bolstered in early 1971 when Dessie visted Grenada to share his litigation skills and knowledge with other Caribbean litigators who at the time were appearing in the local High Court as Defence Counsels for the famous 21 charged with inciting a riot. The outcome in these hearings was acquittal as the prosecution led by Sir Lionel Luckoo,QC of Guyana could not withstand the litigation and advocacy skills of Allan Alexander,SC,Kenneth Foster,QC and Dr.William Herbert (now deceased) too mention a few.
His professional contribution extended beyond law and this is why at one time he sought political office and became the PNM representative for Tunapuna. He was anxious to assist the down trodden and in his later years as he led Trinity Chambers, he continued to fight for the disadvantaged using the court as a vehicle to bring about the necessary changes.
His courageous contributions as a public policy commentator resonated strongly throughout the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Dessie had a great passion for meaningful change, fairness and equity in Trinidad.
My friend whom I last saw four years ago will be missed. In conclusion, I sincerely hope that his family will be comforted in their grief but also to the Legal Profession of the Republic, you too have lost a friend and strong stalwart.
MAY HE REST IN PEACE
