Subject: About the Toilets in the Cemetery

The ST. JOHN'S UPLIFTMENT GROUP has exercised more patience than anyone in a similar situation should have. We feared that this day would come when we would have no choice but to go public so that the people of Gouyave would understand why the completed toilets in the Dougladstan cemetery are not yet ready for mourners to use. The day has come and even at the risk of being seen as political, we have no choice but to give a detailed account of where we are regarding the Cemetery projects.

Our Group will always be non-political, and would have come to the same conclusion regardless of which party had ignored our efforts. The time to speak out has come, prompted especially by a pertinent statement made by John Crow, a regular poster on www.gogouyave.com. Mr Crow’s statement reads >>>There is not a politician, alive, dead, or unborn who can remedy the situation in our beloved Grenada.<<<

Yes, Mr. John Crow, if all of us will donate our own little bit and pool our resources together, we can help since we know that government alone cannot do it all by itself.
Our ST. JOHN'S UPLIFTMENT GROUP recognizes that fact. But we are wondering if the government will ever recognize that fact too. What we can't understand is, why isn’t the government willing to cooperate and join those who have literally done the work that they themselves should have done.

As everyone should know by now, the Dougladstan cemetery shed extension plus the men and women's toilets were constructed exclusively by the ST. JOHN'S UPLIFTMENT GROUP without any help period, from the previous or this current government, despite what one would-be politician openly said during the last election.
The reason why the toilets are not yet ready for use by mourners is due to an oversight that caused the water connection to be left undone. So we sent numerous letters to various ministerial heads beginning with our own St. John representative, asking for help to make that final water connection. To date not any of those supposedly responsible representatives have bothered to respond to any of our letters.

In case the readers are unaware, here are the unadulterated facts:

We began by making it clear to the NNP government that our Group had no political affiliation and would not compromise if that was what was required. On that basis, we were informed that the Keith Mitchell government was willing to partially fund the construction of the toilets. Unfortunately before they could proceed to actualize their promise, the Keith Mitchell government was defeated at the polls. Consequently our group contacted our new St. John’s representative via e-mail and he assured us that he would try to make his new government uphold the promise of the old defeated government. Since my family and I were going to be in Grenada for carnival in August, 2008, honorable Michael Church agreed to personally meet with me and any other members of our group. He was gracious enough to join me at the Coyaba Hotel where we discussed the cemetery projects in greater detail, in addition to some other projects that he wanted to introduce in St. John’s. I began by repeating to our representative that our Group was strictly non-political and would have gladly worked with the NNP government just as we are willing to work with the NDC. Our only interest, I told him, was the social betterment of Gouyave. I then went on to confirm that our Group would be responsible for funding the bulk of the project, but we would appreciate his government funding the small remaining balance. With that understanding he left after exchanging personal e-mails and home addresses.

Then came the global economic downturn, so rather than continuing to expect government's help in those tough economic times, we informed the honorable gentleman that our Group would turn inward to raise the additional funds ourselves. Let me note here that the information was a one-way street as there was absolutely no acknowledgement from the honorable minister. One of our members, Mikey Passee, suggested that we should hold a Raffle to raise the additional funds. He went as far as donating his own personal money to print the tickets to allow the Group to hold the Raffle. Despite the success of those efforts we were still short of our goal by a few thousand dollars. Finally, thanks to the generosity of one of our Group members who gave a huge additional donation, we were able to finally make up the difference to fund the entire construction of the toilets without us having to look towards the government for that additional monetary help.

Let me repeat clearly for all to understand that we, The ST. JOHN'S UPLIFTMENT GROUP, funded the entire Dougladstan Cemetery project using our own resources without ANY government's assistance.

When the Group administrators who were overseeing the project for us during its construction, informed us that they committed an error by assuming that there was a water connection nearby that they intended to use, our Group turned to the government and sent several letters and e-mails to our representative, Honorable Michael Church, pleading with him to have government make the water connection and take over the toilets’ maintenance. Our Group or I have received not even one response since. At the Reunion last August, I brought up the subject with the representative again and was told that he did not receive any communication from us. I asked him if there was a change in his e-mail address as he had previously answered a couple of my e-mails using that same address to congratulate him on his victory. He asked me to re-send the letter to him. I sent it to his ministerial address, his home address and his e-mail. Yet we received absolutely no answer.

It was then suggested that the same letter should be sent to Honorable Joseph Gilbert, the Minister of Works, as he might be able to help. To show our respect we sent a copy of that letter to the honorable Michael Church as well. We have had no responses from neither of those two gentlemen. In March it was further suggested that that letter should be sent to the Health Minister, Senator Ann Peters. We did, only to meet with the same NO RESPONSE to date.

(Continued on in post 2).
